Phacelia campanularia, commonly known as Desert Bluebells or California Bluebells, is a striking annual wildflower native to the deserts of Southern California. Growing approximately 6–18 inches tall, it produces brilliant deep cobalt-blue, bell-shaped flowers above softly textured gray-green foliage in late winter and spring. Desert Bluebells thrive in full sun, well-draining sandy or gravelly soil, and low-water conditions, making them an excellent choice for desert gardens, xeriscapes, containers, borders, and pollinator plantings. Generally grown in USDA Zones 7–11, they perform best in cool to mild weather (around 50–75°F) and can tolerate brief light frosts. The vivid flowers attract native bees and other beneficial pollinators. Sow seeds in fall in mild-winter and Southwestern climates or in early spring in colder areas. Easy to grow from seed and spectacular when planted in groups, Desert Bluebells create an unforgettable sweep of brilliant blue—order seeds now and bring a burst of desert spring color to your garden.
