Welcome Bees & Butterflies

Monarda fistulosa, commonly known as Wild Bergamot or Bee Balm, is an aromatic perennial wildflower native across much of North America, from Canada through the United States into northeastern Mexico. It forms upright clumps approximately 2–4 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide, gradually spreading through underground rhizomes. Rounded clusters of lavender to pinkish-purple flowers bloom during summer and sometimes into early fall, attracting bumblebees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its fragrant, gray-green foliage adds texture to native gardens and wildflower borders.

Monarda fistulosa grows well in full sun to light shade and well-draining soil. Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental irrigation during extended dry periods. Although it tolerates occasional drought, prolonged dryness can stress plants and increase susceptibility to powdery mildew. Allow space for good airflow. In hot Southwest gardens, provide afternoon shade and avoid letting the roots dry excessively during extreme summer heat. Cooler foothill and mountain gardens are especially suitable.

Best suited to approximately USDA Zones 3–9, Wild Bergamot is a cold-hardy perennial that dies back in winter and returns in spring. Zone 3 corresponds to average annual extreme minimum temperatures of approximately −40 to −30°F; local conditions and seed origin influence performance.

Sow in spring or fall, pressing the tiny seeds onto the surface of a fine seed-starting mix and keeping them evenly moist during germination.

THIS LISTING IS FOR A PACK OF APPROX. 7900 SEEDS (1/10 OZ.)
