Its unusual, pine-cone-shaped, silver-green segments are adorned with flat, translucent, papery spines that resemble delicate ribbons or parchment, giving it a memorable appearance. A slow-growing, low-water plant, it thrives in full sun and extremely well-drained soil, forming a branching cluster approximately 6–12 inches tall and 9–18 inches wide.
